Artist Statement
I am fascinated by modern American spirituality-everything from communes to new-age retreats and seminars. Attempts to meld ancient and established with the new and modern often yield interesting results. Ultimately, however, they all boil down to the same thing: the human craving for a meaningful religious practice despite alienation from traditional religion.

My recent narrative landscapes use these scenarios to explore ideas of self-improvement, spirituality, and God. The figures pick and choose elements of spiritual traditions from world religions and other spiritual practices. They strive to connect with deeper meaning (and with each other) within a “nature” that is increasingly hard to touch. The fantasy, comedy, seriousness, connection and alienation depicted in these images are all an essential part of this process.
